As far back as 1770 the inaugural hotel was completed in Chamonix Haute Savoie.
Before this Chamonix Haute Savoie constituted a wild and craggy farming hamlet where people captured their animals and farmed their own barley.
Barns at this time were used to raise dairy herds during the summer.
The milk was conserved by transforming it into cheese and butter and preserved in the village for use over the bleak winter times.
In the winter the farmhouses were bolted, and any valuables were put safely in a tiny mazot.
Who devised chalet holidays is obscured by time, it was likely various zealous people who recognised a pattern which people liked.
With Erna Low it started when she was a nostalgic graduate who could not afford to visit her folks back home in Austrias frequently as she would like to.
So in 1930 she took a risk and put ad in the London Times to invite guests on a winter holiday. The cost was £15 and they traveled to and from the ski resort, had food and accommodation in the sole chalet, and had skiing equipment and tuition.
