Mermaids, contrary to the popular sailor myths, are a very shy creature and will not come out very readily, unless they know they will be safe. While mermaids used to be very open and willing to help out mortals when they needed it, they have since learned that mortals do not always have their best intentions at heart. While they could hide beneath the waves in the mortal world for years, since mortals started to explore the oceans more, they feared that they would be discovered, so they fled here, to be safe with us.
Unicorns have been here much longer than the mermaid colony has been. They came here when they were very few of them left, only half a dozen or so where left when they came to us here. They have since grown in numbers since they have been here, but are not ready, by any means, to return to the mortal world. If you do not identify yourself as a wizard by wearing your academic robes when you go down to the stable, you are taking the chance of being harmed by going down there. While unicorns are a very docile creature, by nature, they can be very violent if they believe their lives or the lives of one of their herd could be in danger.
Mortals used to hurt the unicorns for their horns, but it was senseless death. They would kill the unicorn, take their horn, but leave their body to rot in the sun. It was not a very graceful death for such a magnificent and elegant creature.
