Poker Assailed by Swiss Supreme Court poker online is in jeopardy for Swiss poker players since the Swiss Supreme Court on June 2 decided that poker was purely a “game of luck” rather than skill. This ruling overturned an earlier decision by a lower court that Texas Hold ‘em poker was a game of skill and should be allowed to take place anywhere, including hotels, bars and restaurants. The Supreme Court decision overrules the original ruling and makes poker legal to play only in established casinos. The Swiss Supreme Court ruling is based on UIGEA (the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) which was implemented on June 1. The International Federation of Poker (IFP), recognized as an international governing body on the game of poker, was quick to respond to the ruling and decried the Supreme Court’s decision. The IFP’s president, Anthony Holden, a well-known player and author on the game, issued a statement opposing the Supreme Court’s decision and claiming that classifying poker as simply a game of luck is wrong. Holden contends that poker is a “mind sport” that requires strategic skill. Poker has been recognized as a “mind sport” by the International Mind Sports Association, which is recognized as a game authority by the Olympic Committee. The IFP statement compared poker to other mind sports similar to chess or bridge. The IFP has vowed to continue its mission on behalf of poker and the champion the rights of poker enthusiasts to play the game openly without the threat of being charged with committing illegal activity.

Knowing how your online poker opponents perceive you is a great way to take advantage of them-if your opponents think that you’re a tight poker online player, you can take advantage of them by playing looser, and if they think you’re loose, you can do so simply by playing tight. I’ve found that the best way to read how your opponents think you play (and take advantage of that knowledge) is to manipulate exactly how they see you. If you fashiou a ficticious playing style, you’l have a good grasp of you your opponents think you play, and you’ll be able to use whatever your strengths are to that advantage. I’m usually a looser player in the later stages of the game, so I spend the early parts of a poker tournament establishing a tight image. This way, by the time my opponents think that I’m a tight player, I can comfortably open up my game, knowing that my opponents won’t suspect a thing. Figure out which playing style that you’re most comfortable playing, and make it more effective my doing your best to have your opponents believe that you play the opposite way.

I was playing at a local poker room recently and hadn’t had a hand in hours. I was fold fold fold. The blinds were 1 and 2 and I had about half a stack. Not that that’s too terribly important, but this is something you should watch out for, a short stack getting involved. But the story is about bluffing and learning how to do it the wrong way. I looked down to find pocket kings, yep the big KK sitting in my poker hand. An early position player made it 30 to go, which is about 15x the big blind. I found this odd, so I made it 70 to go, leaving me with just 50 left in my stack. The board came A K 8. There it was the trip kings I’d been waiting for. Sure our guy could have trip aces, but with such a gross over bet, I knew I was good. As soon as the 8 hit the board the early position raiser said, “I’m all in.” In a loud voice and stared me down. “Ha….haha, so am I.” I wryly smiled. You could see his eyes drop as he had to pony up the 50 chips to match my call. He had about 50 left after that. Of course he flipped over garbage and my trip kings held over his 89 off. But it’s an interesting lesson to be learned. Where do you see these kinds of bluffs? I mean really who other than than pros on TV bluff people out of a pot with an all in bet? I’d have been much more worried if he aimed for half my stack and made a solid initial raise and just called my reraise. It just goes to show you that the pros are pros for a reason. And you need to remember the sessions on TV are edited, you don’t see every poker hand, you just see the exciting ones, that includes the all in bluffs. The real bluffs, the tricks of the trade just aren’t exciting enough to air on TV, so you don’t see nearly as much of that. But if people want to keep learning that way, I’ll be happy to read them and take their chips.
